Project Lantern

This app collects no usage data. Rather than stop at “we don't collect”, the list below names every single occasion on which the device reaches the internet — because that is the real question.

Last updated: 6 October 2026.

What never happens

No account, no analytics, no ads

You do not sign up, we ask for no email address and we create no identifier. There is no analytics tool, no ad network and no crash reporting.

Which lesson you open, what you search for, which map you download — all of it stays on the device. It does not reach us, because there is no server for it to reach.

Translation

The text does not leave the device

Lesson texts are translated by Apple's on-device translation system. The sentences being translated are not sent to us or to any third party.

When a language's translation pack is downloaded for the first time, Apple performs that download, and that step falls under Apple's own privacy terms.

When you download a map

A request goes to the Protomaps server

When you download a region, the app requests tile data from build-metadata.protomaps.dev and build.protomaps.com. As with any HTTPS request, those servers see your IP address and which byte ranges you asked for.

No account, cookie or identifier is sent. Once the download finishes, the map opens entirely offline and no further request is ever made.

When you download a library

A request goes to the Kiwix archive

Knowledge packs come from download.kiwix.org. That server likewise sees your IP address and which file you asked for.

Once a pack is downloaded, reading and searching happen entirely on the device; the word you search for goes nowhere.

Optional models

Assistant and speech recognition

The assistant model and the speech-recognition model are downloaded from huggingface.co. Both are optional; if you download neither, the lessons, maps and libraries keep working.

Once a model is on the device it runs there: neither your question nor the answer leaves the phone.

Planned

Buying the USB feature

The USB copying feature has not been written yet. When it arrives, payment will be taken through Paddle, which acts as the merchant of record.

Your card details never reach us. The data Paddle collects (email address, country, tax information) falls under Paddle's privacy terms. After the purchase the licence is verified offline — there is no need to ask a server again.

Contact

A link is only followed if you tap it

The Telegram, WhatsApp and email links inside the app do nothing until you touch them. When you do, you move to that app, which is governed by its own terms.

Children

We never ask your age

We collect no age, location or identity information — since we collect no data at all, this is not an exception.

If this page changes, the date above changes with it. Earlier versions remain in the app's source repository.
